Thermal Engineering International to Convert Condensers for Texas Power Plants

January 20, 2009

Danvers, MA – Babcock Power Inc. (BPI), based in Danvers, MA announced today that its subsidiary, Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc. (TEi), located in Santa Fe Springs CA, has received a contract from Zachry Industrial, Inc. to convert existing condensers, previously utilized in a fossil fueled boiler application, for use in Topaz Power Groups’ new combined cycle power plants known as the Barney Davis and Nueces Bay Energy Centers.

TEi’s scope includes the modification of existing condensers, complete with on-site installation of the modifications. Major modifications include replacement of titanium tubes, new steam bypass lines, LP steam admission line, cathodic protection systems, new vacuum deaerators and main vacuum pumps. TEi integrates the latest welding, engineering design, manufacturing, and testing techniques, to produce condensers with superior mechanical design that offer maximum thermal efficiency and reliability.

The Barney Davis and Nueces Bay Energy Centers will replace existing fossil units, fired by natural gas and oil, at the Corpus Christi, Texas power stations with highly-efficient combined-cycle facilities. The facilities will be rated at 679 MW and 677 MW peak capacities, respectively. Both plants are expected to begin commercial operation in 2010.

Jon Koenig, President of Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc., stated that, “heat transfer equipment conversions demand a high level of expertise in both thermal and mechanical design as well as extensive knowledge of condenser operational performance. We are pleased that Zachry selected TEi for this project that will provide clean, efficient, reliable power for the residents of south Texas.”
