Houston, TX – Struthers Wells, a division of Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc. (TEi), a Babcock Power Inc. company with offices located in Houston, TX and Warren, PA, has been awarded a contract from BAE Systems to design and supply four complete Ketene Furnaces for a new Acetic Acid refining plant. The scope of supply shall include; Natural Draft Radiant Wall Burners, Fuel valve trains, Burner Management System (BMS), Stack, Platforms and Instrumentation. The equipment delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011.

Struthers has had a long History of innovation in the supply of Cabin style heaters dating back to the 1930s when it designed and supplied its first Cabin style Heater for its refinery turnkey contracting business. Through the 1940s Struthers designed and supplied the same style heaters in the styrene process application and fatty acid distillation processes. The cabin style heater was identified as an ideal heater for the Pyrolysis process; the decomposition or transformation of a compound caused by heat, also referred to as cracking. Cracking is a high temperature endothermic reaction and became popular to aid in chemical processing in both the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Struthers became involved in the development of furnaces for the cracking of Acetic acid for the production of acetic anhydride. Ketene is one of the intermediate products of the process and is produced during the cracking process; the furnaces are often referred to as Ketene Furnaces. “Through innovation, experience and excellent customer relations Struthers Wells continued supplying furnaces for various processes in the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries world wide. As a leading supplier of these types of furnaces Struthers Wells is pleased to have been selected to supply the Ketene Furnaces to BAE Systems,” stated Ken Murakoshi, President of Struthers Wells.

Babcock Power Inc. (www.babcockpower.com) is one of the world’s leading suppliers of technology, equipment and services to the power generation industry.

Danvers, MA – Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc. (TEi), located in Santa Fe Springs, CA, a subsidiary of Babcock Power Inc., based in Danvers, MA, and Struthers Wells, a division of (TEi), with offices located in Houston, TX and Warren, PA, has been named the newest member of SHARP in Oklahoma, for their Sapulpa facility. Acceptance into SHARP from OSHA is a prestigious achievement that recognizes plants among business peers as a model for excellence in worksite safety and health.

The U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA’s on-Site Consultation Safety and Health Achievement Program (“SHARP”) recognizes small employers who operate an exemplary safety and health management system. TEi will be honored for their achievement during a ceremony at their Sapulpa, OK facility.

TEi began implementing a safety and health management program in 2010, after their first On-Site Safety Consultation with the Department’s Division of Labor Standards. These consultations are discretionary, and are initiated by employers who want to provide a safe work environment for their workers.

“SHARP has enhanced our plant safety culture. The efforts put forth through the audit process have increased our safety awareness, and made a substantial decrease in the reduction of workers compensation cost,” says Phil Randall, General Operations Manager of Thermal Engineering International (USA), Inc.

SHARP was implemented in Oklahoma in the mid 1990’s and has since offered the highest level consultative services to businesses with 250 or fewer employees. The Oklahoma On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program is the prerequisite for those who wish to be a part of SHARP. It is designed to promote effective workplace safety and health program management by helping the employer locate and remove existing hazards in the facility, thereby reducing injuries and illnesses. SHARP is a reward program designed to provide incentives and support to smaller, high-hazard employers to work with their employees to develop, implement, and continuously improve the effectiveness of their workplace safety and health programs.

Improving solar energy availability for parabolic trough technology

Houston, TX – Struthers Wells, a division of Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc. (TEi), a Babcock Power Inc. company with offices located in Houston, TX and Warren, PA, has been awarded a contract to design and supply two sets of solar steam generators complete with preheaters, kettle type evaporators, superheaters and reheaters, as well as low pressure and high pressure feedwater heaters for power plants located in the Extremadura Region of Spain. The plants are owned by a world leading renewable energy provider.

Struthers Wells equipment will be installed at the two (2) Solar Thermoelectric generation Power Plants, which will have a 50 MW water steam cycle, and use solar energy as the primary energy source collected by a Parabolic Trough Collectors field (PTC). The Plants will also utilize a molten salts thermal storage system, which permits electrical power generation during the lack of solar radiation. The equipment delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2012.

“We are pleased to supply equipment and services, and continue the expansion of our solar generation technology around the world.
